The trick to the sound driver with Win8.1 on a Macbook Pro

I took the opportunity to upgrade my work laptop over the long weekend here in Sydney. The early 2011 13″ Macbook Pro has worked well for me so far, however there are times when the machine is feeling its age – namely on boot and any point where a reasonable amount of disk I/O is required. Since we had one lying around after a change to an internal project, I took the opportunity to pull out the original 320GB hard disk and slipped an 240GB Intel 530 SSD into it instead, and decided to run a fresh install of Windows 8.1 instead of my previous Windows 7 operating system.

The surgery went fine, SSD in and the machine booted fine afterwards. My issue came shortly after the install of Win8.1 – no sound.

Now as a bit of a backstory, I decided that I was going to forgo the standard Bootcamp method of install and save myself the few gigabytes. If I need OSX for updates and firmware upgrades, I can just option-boot the laptop from a USB key. So I decided I would install directly to the hardware without OSX and Bootcamp, and just use the Bootcamp support pack to install the required drivers.

Because USB-key installs are what I do these days, I prepared the Win8.1 Pro ISO and made a bootable USB key. I then inserted it into the MBP, booted it and went through the install process. The install went fine, and then I added a second USB key with most of the required software to get it up and running – 7-Zip, the Apple Bootcamp 5.1 support pack, plus a few other small utilities. I installed 7-Zip, then unzipped the Bootcamp support pack, and ran the installer. All went fine, rebooted and started adding WiFi settings…. hang on. No sound device installed.

A check of the Device Manager shows a ‘High Definition Audio Device’, with a driver reporting as installed, however the device properties show:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

{Operation Failed}

The requested operation was unsuccessful.

After looking around online, there seems to be much weeping and gnashing of teeth over the issue. Microsoft have a KB article for the problem, and many people are experiencing this directly via a Bootcamp install as well which seems like a major bug to me.

After reviewing all these posts and trying all the various ‘driver fixes’ such as Cirrus Logic drivers, Intel HD4000 drivers, and even various Realtek drivers, I appeared to be getting nowhere. After swallowing my pride and starting the download of Win7 Pro, I noticed one of the posts mentioned that booting to install via a USB key gives an EFI install rather than a legacy BIOS install, and that installation from optical media gives you a legacy install which then supposedly works.

After a quick burn of the Win8 ISO and install, I went through the process again, but no worky-worky. Same problem.

As the Win7 ISO download completed and was burning to another DVD-R, I was pontificating on the fact I was about to go back on my plan and remain in a Windows 7 world, then a thought hit me.

Windows 8 install media have an EFI boot partition on them!

This time, I went for the option-boot of the machine, which gave me choice of two optical boot images – an EFI-enabled one, and one simply marked ‘Windows’. I chose that, removed all the old partitions on the SSD from the failed installs and let everything run through. This time, the sound driver took and I had audio!

It appears that when direct-booting the Win8/8.1 media, the EFI-enabled Macbook Pro prefers the EFI-enabled boot partition on the optical disk and in fact gives you an EFI-based install no matter what. The only way is to option-boot the media onto the standard Windows partition and install from that instead.

I hope this helps someone, I lost a whole 24 hours of a long weekend to what is just an annoying bug. Now, hopefully the optical bay converter arrives in the next week so I can get a 500GB Western Digital Black HDD into it, then we start looking at 8GB or 16GB of RAM to really make it fly.

HP Microserver Gen9 around the corner?

The guys over at ServeTheHome have let the cat out of the bag – HP intends to announce their new Proliant Gen9 server range next week.

HP-Proliant-Gen9-600x228

The new HP Proliant Gen9 range, coming soon!

Some interesting tidbits from the article:

HP has undergone a major mindset change over the past few years. Instead of selling well designed, x86 commodity servers, HP is re-thinking how it goes to market. The vision HP is pushing is really one that compute infrastructure will increasingly be managed as pools of resources specialized for specific tasks.

HP’s scaling story is building servers with each successive generation that are easier to manage in pools. HP Gen9 is rolling out with UEFI enhancements and a management platform that will aid in this effort.

The other interesting note about the announcement is the date. The HP ProLiant Gen9 servers are due out on September 8. The company also said that we would see DDR4 and Haswell architectures with the HP Gen9 server lineup. The company also cited that the Intel Developer Forum on September 9-10 in San Francisco would be a place where we would hear more about the line-up. With the major Apple event scheduled for 9/9/2014 there is a likely date for the Haswell-EP (Intel Xeon E5-2600 V3) that we can deduce from this, even if Intel is mum on the subject.

This is all very interesting. What does it mean for the Microserver SKU’s? Well, not very much at all. I would expect that they get a revised motherboard with a later chipset, a CPU bump to the ‘Haswell Refresh’ G1840T and G3240T, and the new Gen9 Management features – whatever they are. There might be newer versions of the Broadcom NICs, More USB3 ports… things along that line. I don’t think we get iLO5 but definitely new & updated onboard management, diagnostic and provisioning tools will be on the cards.

With a new SKU coming, I expect to see some special deals on the Gen8 Microservers coming up later in the year. The Gen9 release of the Proliants is due within a week or so, and we are likely to see a new Gen9 Microserver coming out before the end of the year. Remember that the E3-1220’s go into these quite happily and give a massive boost in performance. So if you can find a cheap E3 CPU – or even have one lying around from upgrades – and the Gen8 chassis goes back on the rebate specials we saw with the N40L/N56L units, definitely worth your time to grab one.

We are seeing the G1610T unit here in Australia retail from AUD$499 at some e-tailers, so if it dipped below AUD$300 they would likely sell very quick.

Windows seedbox for 2 Euros a month!

I was lucky enough to come across a post a couple of weekends ago on LowEndBox.net, a discussion forum regarding cheap web hosting, VPS deals and even dedicated servers. It said that Online.Net (a competitor to OVH in France, known for their ‘Kimsufi’ dedicated servers) was selling some very cheap dedicated servers. These went by the name of ‘Dedibox kidéchire’ and were a limited-time promotion.

How cheap? €2.00 (about AUD$3.00) per month.

Well as you can imagine, I grabbed one immediately. The specs were not high – only a low end, single core VIA CPU. However it came with 2 GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive, plus 100GB worth of FTP backup space in a separate datacentre for free (larger on application, for extra fee). As a part of this promotion, Online.Net had decided to give these machines a shared gigabit connection to the internet – around 24 machines into a single switch, and a single gigabit uplink for all 24 machines to share. Perfect for backups or basic serving of files. These are micro-sized Dell blade servers which are quite old now and well and truly have been depreciated (and paid for themselves too) so they decided to sell thousands of them at basically cost price.

After installing Debian Linux on my first box, I decided this was too good and decided to grab another. So my total outlay is 4 per month.

A number of things have now been ironed out – they now allow for a CentOS 6.x image to be installed, which is my preferred flavour of Linux for various reasons including cPanel compatibility. Unfortunately the new CentOS 7 release changes many things in the structure of the Operating System and this means that the whole cPanel programming needs changing, which will take a while.

There was another option of installing Windows Server onto these machine, but being charged at 23/month. That is some bloody stiff SPLA pricing – we don’t even charge that much at my employer’s hosting environment.

After more discussion on LowEndBox, it was found that Online.Net do not care about seedboxes. Well, they don’t if you use private trackers and no DCMA requests come through. At this point I thought I would finally have to learn rTorrent & ruTorrent on Linux, but then a guy called Joodle had other ideas.

Joodle had already worked out a way to dd a windows image from a remote server onto a OVH Kimsufi server. Funnily enough, the same process works well with Online.Net as they have a similar linux-based rescue mode (boot a linux image to memory). Unfortunately the Windows 7 and Server 2008 images do not work as they require an extra network driver (Intel 82574L) driver to be installed, something that requires greater access to the hardware. Windows 8 & Server 2012R2 does have this drive as a part of the operating system, so that happily installs and works.

After installing uTorrent and getting some bandwidth happening, it is not uncommon to see 10Mb/sec download and I have seen 7-8Mb/sec uploads on some individual torrents. Unfortunately the RDP performance (and ping to me here in Australia) is pretty average to be honest, so it id definitely not a great hosted desktop solution. The download speeds however are more than good enough. It maxes out the around 8Mbit ADSL2+ I have here in my new apartment.

Absolutely wrapped with the performance of the two new boxes, and looking forward to everything I can now do with them.

Who makes money from fake double-edge razor blades?

The answer – everybody in the production & distribution channel.

There have been plenty of posts on a number of the shaving forums by well-meaning people asking why do people even bother with counterfeiting blades as ‘the money in it isn’t that big’, and saying that the fake blades are really a rare thing. Well, generally the money isn’t that big. But the margins are MASSIVE. Anytime that someone can make anywhere from 200%-300% on their money as a sure thing, you would be mad not to do it.

And at the end of the day, the person footing the bill is the consumer – the person buying the blades to use. They do not get what they pay for.

What brought on this post? After trawling through eBay today I found the new ‘Thai’ Gillette Super Stainless blades selling for USD$90 per 100, delivered free from seller ‘topitems888’. Thai postage is fairly cheap so I would not think that they would need more than $10 for postage worldwide. At the resulting 80c per blade, I can buy vintage Gillette Spoilers from the 1970’s!

Don’t believe me? Here’s the proof.

90 Dollar blades from China. Viva la eBay!

Counterfeit Gillette blades from China, being sold at 3x-4x the cost of real Gillette Blades from their Russian factory.

80 cents per blade. Holy crap I want in on this business. Someone is making huge money, and it is the entire distribution chain. Not even the biggest online retailers of double edge blades can buy Gillette’s Russian produced blades (at PPI St Petersburg) for the prices that the Chinese charge FOB either a boat or Truck. If they are lucky, they get a 35% margin on the delivered cost, so the average $30 tuck of Gillette Silver Blues cost the retailer about $22 to get them into stock on a volume purchase of around 100K blades.

The first thing that people have to understand is that a single double edge razor blade costs almost nothing to produce, package and load onto a truck for delivery. Having worked in a manufacturing business where product unit costs are calculated to six decimal places, it only takes a very small movement in input costs (materials, machine costs, energy, labour) to have a large impact on margins. Even more so when you have very large numbers of units produced which is the case with razor blades. That said, with massive unit numbers produced then the overall costs of labour and energy costs literally is tiny fractions of a cent per unit.

The cost to produce a basic double-edge razor blade is literally less than one cent. That might seem very low to some people, but remembering that these counterfeit blades are produced in China where factories can buy cheap stainless steel from steel mills, labour and energy costs are extremely low compared to western markets, and the volumes are very high. The factories produce the blades and will sell the finished blades packaged and ready to go for 2 cents per blade on a 100% margin. The average 100-blade tuck would cost just $2.

The people buying these blades from the Chinese factory are likely wholesaling them into markets like Thailand and encouraging people to sell via eBay where the margins are higher. I cannot see them paying any more than about $3 per 100-blade tuck delivered into Thailand. They on-sell these at at a low margin to get rid of them quickly, probably only $5 per 100 blades. This leaves meat on the bone for sellers trying to compete with $10 pillars of Astra SP from trusted online sellers such as BestShave.net and the like.

But it seems that the Thai sellers are pushing them out into the market place in Thailand but they have leftovers. So they sell them online at a 1600% profit margin. I know eBay fees are high but they certainly aren’t requiring margins like that. Of course you might have people buying them from shops because they are cheap, and selling them on eBay. Who knows, but the money being made is obscene. All from counterfeit blades.

More fake Chinese double edge blades on eBay

As a guy who appreciates a good shave, I did switch away from your standard Gillette or Schick multi-blade cartridges and ‘canned foam/gel’ method of shaving and went back to the method that many of our fathers and grandfathers used to use to remove facial hair – double-edge shaving.

Now this bought a few nice benefits – a better shave, less irritation and bumps/ingrown hairs, and a much more relaxing and satisfying experience. When you can lather up in the morning with a nice soft badger brush and some quality shaving cream like one from Taylor of Old Bond Street or even the old Italian standby Proraso, it is always a great start to the day.

Generally Gillette et. al  do not want western markets shaving with Double edge blades, as they would prefer to sell us a 3-4-5 blade cartridge from anywhere from $3-$6 each. Since the invention of eBay, sellers from other markets can deliver 100 top quality double edge blades into western markets for the price of around $20-$30, making each blade worth around 30 cents. This makes shaving much cheaper, enjoyable and generally better. A whole swag of businesses have sprung up online selling all sorts of shaving related items, even new double-edge razors, brushes, blades, shaving soaps, creams, aftershaves. Even the old ‘cut-throat’ razors are making a comeback – generally better known as ‘Straight Razors’ – along with all the things needed to keep them sharp like sharpening stones & strops. A very good Australian based seller is MensBiz, with whom I have had good experiences with fast delivery, even if the prices are a bit higher than buying from overseas.

Unfortunately with this new found popularity has meant that unscrupulous manufacturers in China who can produce a very low quality blade for about half of one cent will package them up to look like a higher quality, known brand blade. While the profits may not be very large on a per-unit basis, in volume it can turn into a very lucrative business.

I spotted some of these blades on eBay recently – hideously expensive at USD$40 per 100 and USD$18 postage. Not a blade I am familiar with, but having tried the Thai Gillette Superthins previously which were pretty good, these had my attention immediately. The packaging is fairly eyecatching:

A seemingly normal looking tuck of Gillette double-edge blades.

A seemingly normal looking tuck of Gillette double-edge blades.

So far, so good. The packing follows the ‘double-split’ packaging that we get from the Indian-made Gillete 7 O’Clock Blacks. Then I started looking a bit closer to the remaining photos:

A closer look at the packs of blades.

A closer look at the packs of blades. Note how the cardboard is peeing back from the bottom edge.

The back side of the packaging.

The back side of the packaging. A big tell-tale sign of a fake is the quality of the box folds, and how it is not assembled properly. The printing is also not as crisp as it should be.

Cardboard has peeled back from the crease after being bent into shape.

As you can see, the cardboard has peeled back from the crease after being bent into shape, and the box is not glued nice and square.

Oh dear. That is another decent yet clumsy effort to pass of cheap Chinese blades as a quality Gillette product.

It seems that these low-quality blades were produced by a company in China called “RunWei Blade”,  and those in the traditional shaving circles already know they are producing bad fakes of the Chinese Blue Blades that are usually made in the Gillette Joint Venture factory in Shanghai. Those “FakeBlues” seem to make their way to the West via eBay and DX, now it looks like they are also doing the same for these Thai Super Stainless. I am not even aware of these SuperStainless even being a real branding of Gillette Blades.

If you look closely at the second photo, you will notice the cardboard cracking along the folds of the box. Those that have been around the wetshaving forums like Paste & Cut for a while will know that the counterfeit Gillette Rubie Platinum Plus suffered from the same issues on the box, as did the ‘Fakeidiums’ – the nickname for counterfeit Super Iridium blades.

Also you see some non-sharp printing, and the box isn’t made ‘in Square’ and it is not glued together properly either. All the hallmarks of the previously fake blades. Here’s a pic of the Rubie’s which I previously published to various Shaving Forums showing the delamination of the cardboard on the box folds:

This shows the difference between counterfeit and real Gillette Rubie Platinum Plus boxes.

And one of the Fakeidiums:

There are a number of sellers of these on eBay, I would steer clear of them all for ANY purchase. All originate from Thailand and are selling them at anything from USD$58 – USD$70 per 100 blades on a delivered basis.

It is a shame but I am posting this information in the hope that nobody gets caught out by purchasing these blades. The pricing is crazily high, and even more so when you consider that great blades like PermaSharp Supers and Silver Blues are in plentiful supply and at much cheaper rates than what the asking price is on these.

If you want to know more about trying out more traditional methods of shaving and some of the great products you can use, I would highly recommend Paste & Cut for those in Australia and New Zealand. The community there is small but active and is more than happy to share their knowledge with newcomers.

Problems for NBNco revenue growth over the next 8 months

After tonight’s earlier post, I have along with JXeeno of myNBN.info have taken the time to model the newly discovered rollout delays into the statistics system over there and graphed them out.

The results are published below, and are  very troubling for NBNco and supporters of the project.

The impact of premises passed and able to connect to the NBN in the next 8 months will grow much slower than previously anticipated. Click for full size.

The impact of premises passed and able to connect to the NBN in the next 8 months will grow much slower than previously anticipated.

The biggest problem you will see here is that the growth of connected premises will have a significant hole up until April 2014 when the growth of premises passed will start to come on stream properly. NBNco has consistently called this the ramp up. We have already have seen the initial ramp-up in May, June and July this year, where the active premises has jumped considerably, adding well over double the amount of previously passed premises.

So what happens when you do not pass premises? Well for one, they cannot connect. Now with NBNco looking for all the revenues it can get while paying Telstra the first $7million of it’s disconnection bounties, it would seem that you would want people on the network as quickly as possible. Making the total market size smaller will only reduce the increases in revenues which NBNco would have dearly loved.

It is way too early for any real data on exactly how bad this will be. The only silver lining is that with take up rates very strong and at higher speeds than anticipated, NBNco CEO Mike Quigley stated at the Joint Parliamentary Committee in Sydney on April 19th that they were was expecting to beat its $15million revenue target for FY13. This along with Connectivity Virtual Circuit (CVC) charges which have been levied against RSP’s for allowing bandwidth onto the NBN Network to their customers has also been much higher than budgeted and is also helping significantly to the revenue base of NBNco and certainly faster than was planned. It will take time to model exactly the impact of these figures, but data of takeup rates due to be released under FOI requests in the next 3-4 weeks will help.

Thankfully, the numbers planned for completion in May 2014 are almost back on par with previously planned number, while June 2014 will see the deficit being cleared completely and beaten by around 56,000 premises, while July 2014 is now also ahead of the previous forecasts. But the damage will have already been done and the revenues since earlier in the financial year will not have been there.

A bit of free advice for NBNco:

  • Get your Fixed Wireless towers up, right now. Time to push Ericsson to pull back the deficits in all states, and especially WA and SA. You need to be ahead of plan by the end of this calendar year, and the towers not only need to be active but have active RSP’s on their Points of Interconnect (I’m talking about Dubbo WSAMs and also 2HOM-01 recently where the FSAM was activated but Lidcombe POI was not. I am sure there are other examples.
  • Make sure that areas already active have sufficient resources applied to them in order for connections to be made. Horror stories on Whirlpool of people going to the back of the line due to either civil works required, or contractors just not turning up because it was a bit wet simply is not good enough. An appointment missed is revenue missed for 2 months.
  • Get more MDU’s on deck. Your contractors dealing with them are slow and inefficient. Your communication to Owners Corporations is rather dire where nobody knows what is going on and contractors have not got the information.
  • Make a database that can be searched along with the name of the MDU, the address, and the contact point of the Owner’s Corporation if known. Has the MDU made contact with NBNco? Has permission been granted by the Owners Corporation to have the fibre installed? This would all help people chase their development for you.

NBNco accidentally leaks full list of FSAMs to Interwebs

Well, it has been an interesting couple of hours. I’ve been pretty quiet on the NBN front in the last couple of weeks as work has been rather busy, but this deserves a special post.

For those that follow my twitter account @Monsta_AU, you may have noticed a small post earlier tonight.

Massive leak of data from #NBNco today. Gearing up to release it later tonight after cleanup. Comes from public document published by NBNco.

Well, this is the post announcing what I have found.

Today, NBNco published an update to its DCD plan on its website in both PDF and XLS (as ZIP) formats. The DCD plan is a listing of when the Fibre Serving Area Module (FSAM, or each separate area on the NBNco Rollout Map) is completed and the timer starts on the 18 months for the disconnection of the copper phone services in that area. The PDF is fairly boring, but the ZIP file containing an XLS spreadsheet is available from http://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbnco/documents/rollout-info-irrr-dcd-09-August2013.zip, while due to the data contained within and the fact that I fully expect this data to be pulled offline around 8am Monday, I am mirroring at http://blog.themonsta.id.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/rollout-info-irrr-dcd-09-August2013.zip.

Upon noting this data had change via an automated checker, I downloaded the file and opened in Excel to that it contains links to a master data source. Knowing that this means there will be some cached data within the file, I started doing some massaging, and with some help from another source I was able to pull out a heap of data from the original spreadsheet. Data I am sure that management at NBNco will want to make sure is not in the public domain. Well, you guys published it in your own website.

While I have cleaned up the data, and killed a heap of columns that don’t help anybody, there’s some really interesting data in the XLSX. Like how much delay has occurred on a particular FSAM in just 5 months. But bes of all, there is a listing of a large number of FSAMs. There’s 1107 records. NBNco announced a while ago that they have designed the rollout for a million premises around the nation. It’s my educated guess that this spreadsheet is the FSAMs that contain that one million premises. The entire NBN rollout will pass around 11 million homes, so this is about 10% of the entire rollout.

There is some data in here that will upset some people, especially where some dates now being shown have commencement dates in 2018 and 2019. You will have to ask NBNco why that is. I will be sending a complete extraction of the data to various local technology journalists that I respect and trust so they can do the full analysis of the information we have then ask NBNco what is going on.

As an NBN supporter, I have mixed emotions about releasing this just weeks from a federal election that could indeed see the project scuttled by radical conservatives that seem to be driven to implement a pamphlet rather than properly costed policies. If Malcolm and Tony want to use this against the NBN, I will be here posing the inadequacies of their Fraudband policy. However by releasing this I believe the data being available in the tech community will enable debate and keep everybody honest.

NBN Rollout update 4th July 2013

Since we had no updates last week as NBNco raced towards the June 30 targets, we are definitely due for map updates today. The new Minister for Broadband and the Digital Economy, Anthony Albanese MP, has called a press conference for today to release the rollout metrics for June 30 which is eagerly awaited.

As I have access to NBN figures through a couple of sources, it appears that NBNco has indeed reached it’s revised rollout targets for both the brownfield and greenfield (new estates) rollouts. The Greenfield numbers were especially strong, achieving 44,000 premises and only being 1,000 premises short of the upper target of the target range of 45,000 premises.

Brownfield rollout figured for ‘premises passed’ appears to have just scraped in with 163,600 addresses on their fibre footprint list. The disappointing part of this is around 56,000 premises are not able to connect immediately as they are in Multi-Dwelling Units (MDUs) such as apartment blocks or units which need Owners Corporation permission to make modifications to common property. Buildings where premission is not granted repeatedly may be declared ‘frustrated’ by NBNco and could be subject to a Telstra ‘stop sales’ clause where 20 days after a premises is declared frustrated, Telstra will not be able to connect anyone in that building to a copper service. Ry Crozier wrote a great article on this over at ITnews.
